Four Mature Canaries and One Young Palm

A look back at a May 30 treatment visit for four mature Canary Island date palms and one young palm in Escondido.

On May 30, I treated four mature Canary Island date palms and one young Canary at an Escondido property. My field note from that visit says all five looked healthy. I provided a soil drench and exterior treatment, including the young, recently planted palm.

This is a look back at that May visit. The healthy appearance I wrote down was an observation at the time; it does not tell us what was happening inside each palm or establish how the palms responded afterward.

Count the young palm, too

The four mature Canaries were the larger part of this group, but they were not the whole job. I included the young palm in the treatment and noted the different stage of growth. A small palm should not disappear from the care conversation just because taller trees draw the eye.

Keep each palm in the picture

For a homeowner with several palms, a useful starting point is a whole-palm photo of each one and a clear count. Show the smaller palms as well as the tall ones. Tell me which palm concerns you and when you first noticed a change; that gives us something specific to discuss.

Preventive care starts with considering the palms you want to keep. The work and timing should be discussed for the actual group, rather than assuming every palm on a property needs an identical plan.
